Umm, excuse me who said it’s already time for Q1 to be over? I really can’t believe how fast time has gone. It feels like I’ve already lived a lifetime since January! For this year, instead of going the route of New Year’s Resolutions, I decided to choose four words to live and work by as quarterly themes. During the first quarter of the year, I focused on the words “Show Up”. These words were my compass for how I lived life and ran my business. Now, as we enter April and the second quarter of the year, the word I am focusing on is Grow.
While I knew nothing of how the world would look in Q2 (hello, COVID-19), I truly don’t think I could have anticipated choosing a more perfect theme. The past month of March was a little bit dark and dreary. It was hard to stay motivated. Daily life drastically changed. So much fear set in. During that final month of Q1, I was thankful for the words Show Up as they reminded me all I could do was my best in those moments.
Now we find ourselves in April, and life is still out of whack. However, I’m no longer dwelling on the sadness and darkness I felt last month. Instead I feel invigorated to adjust to this new normal and to grow while making the best of things. So often we forget that in order to grow, plants first must be buried in the dark earth. It’s damp, wet, and cold down there. Then, slowly but surely, little roots start to form. Those roots get stronger, deeper, and before you know the plant sprouts.
For me at this time, the word grow is so nuanced and important. I definitely needed this time of dampness and darkness to work on growing my roots. In my personal life, this has looked like taking time for self-care. Watering my soul and my home. It will also look like nourishing my family both near and far to make sure everyone in my ecosystem has what they need to stay healthy and flourish. In my work life, this Q2 will be used for the behind the scenes work. Since I can’t practice my normal work of photo sessions and coffee consultations, instead I can use this time to clean up my processes, elevate my client experience, and work on new content with a refreshed sense of creativity from the ground up!
Maybe you already feel that you have a deep and strong root system. If that’s the case then I am happy for you! But it also bears reminding that storms can strengthen your roots even further. There is always room for growth.
Use these next three months to continue to grow. Whether you grow in your business, personal life, relationships, it doesn’t matter! The sky is the limit. All you need is dirt, a little water, and a whole lotta sunshine! We’ll check back in in July and see how far we’ve all come on our journey. In my Q1 post I said that 2020 is our year. I still firmly believe that it is. Life throws us curveballs, but we keep on showing up and growing up, okay!
